Jeremy Seabrook
Author, Playwright and Journalist
Jeremy Seabrook (1939 - 2024) had a prolific and varied career. His first published book was 'The Underprivileged' in 1967; his last was 'Private Worlds - Growing Up Gay in Post War Britain'. His books were often social and politic commentaries based on people’s experiences and testimonies. He wrote extensively about the poor in India and across the world from the mid 80's and championed environmental concerns in his work with Winin Pereira in India in the 90's.But he was impossible to pigeon-hole – often to the frustration of publishers!
He wrote plays for radio, TV and theatre - witty, subversive comedies often about class, full or warmth, sensitivity and refreshingly free of the usual stereotypes. He was a regular columnist for The Guardian, The Times, Race and Class, Resurgence, New Internationalist, and The Statesman and Pioneer newspapers in India.
Jeremy has been described as '...one of England's most imaginative and creative writers...reminiscent of George Orwell'.
'Boy Bitten by a Lizard' is his first fiction novel, but by no means his first book with a queer theme. His stories of queer lives in India in the early 90's were pioneering: 'Colonies of the Heart' and 'Love in a Different Climate'.
He completed 'Boy Bitten by a Lizard' just before he died in November 2024.
